Elena Messner was born in Klagenfurt/Celovec in 1983 and grew up bilingually as a Carinthian Slovene there as well as in Ljubljana and Salzburg. She studied comparative literature and cultural studies in Vienna and Aix-en-Provence. During her doctoral studies, she researched and worked for several years in Belgrade, Sarajevo and Zagreb. From 2013 to 2018 she taught German at the universities in Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. Since 2014 she has been teaching at the University of Klagenfurt. She regularly realizes scientific, cultural or artistic projects, has worked as an editor, translator, literary critic, cultural scientist and editor, and writes novels, essays, reviews and theater texts. Since 2023 she has been researching as a Senior Scientist (FWF) at the Institute of Slavic Studies in Vienna.
